This Performing and Visual Arts Facility is located on the main quadrangle at this private educational institution in rural Pennsylvania, two hours north of Washington, DC. The building is situated on a sloped site and integrated into the landscape to lower the building's above-grade profile and complement the scale of the campus. The facility is finished with natural materials such as wood and Pennsylvania limestone and interact with the sylvan landscape on all four sides. The outer lobby and circulation envelope of the building is circumscribed by a floor-to-ceiling glass curtain wall that blurs distinctions between indoor and outdoor spaces. From the outside, this space appears luminescent at night. The facility's program includes a 600-seat theater, a 120-seat studio theater, recital and chorale halls, theater support spaces and art and dance studios. Variable acoustics and advanced theater teaching technologies have been implemented as part of the Academy's goal to incorporate the performing arts into its core curriculum.
