Columbia University Law School
Jerome L. Greene Hall
New York, New York
40,000 square feet
1996

This addition elegantly resolves the formal and programmatic challenges entailed in expanding the 1963 Harrison and Abramovitz building, and in so doing, revitalizes the School's identity and celebrates its tradition of academic excellence. The project connects the previously isolated law school with the university campus and adds user amenities lacking in the original program. Principal project elements include: a new entry and marquee, grand stairways that penetrate the new three-story entry lobby, a café, lounges, student activity spaces and the renovated law library. The new south-facing façade, which is defined by a horizontal rhythm of aluminum sunscreens, provides a striking counterpoint to the vertical definition of the original building.
