Seamen's Church Institute
New York, New York
32,000 square feet
1991

The design for this mixed-use building formally defers to the building's historical context and simultaneously contributes to it by affirming the nautical sensibility of the client (a non-profit benevolence organization) and the seaport area. The new building incorporates the restored façade of an 18th-century mercantile structure and interprets its proportional system and materials across the first flour floors in a distinctly modern idiom. In contrast, the fifth and sixth floors, clad in white enameled steel and encircled by decks, metaphorically assume the character of a ship. The building houses administrative offices, a navigation training laboratory, social activity spaces, meeting rooms, an art gallery, legal services offices and an ecumenical chapel.
