Newseum/Freedom Forum Foundation World Headquarters
Washington, DC
550,000 square feet
Projected Completion: 2005

The Newseum/Freedom Forum Foundation World Headquarters occupies the last available site on Pennsylvania Avenue. Its position between the White House and the Capitol Building in itself is a metaphor for the “Fourth Estate.”  The mixed-use, 550,000 sf building includes a museum dedicated to the First Amendment and a free press, foundation offices, and residences. The building’s principal façade is a glass curtain wall punctuated by a 60-foot-high plane of stone engraved with the forty-five words of the First Amendment. The freedom and presence of the press are reiterated through a large-scale media wall that can be seen from the street through the transparent glass encompassing most of the building. In addition to state-of-the-art interactive exhibits designed by Ralph Appelbaum Associates, the building includes technologically-advanced black box broadcasting facilities, a 500-seat auditorium, a museum store, a "news cafe" with views of the US Capitol, a conference center with an outdoor terrace, a restaurant, and staff offices.
