University of New York The Academic Science Building at Medgar Evers College is the first new building of the College's master plan, completed by Polshek Partnership in 1995. Among the principal goals of the master plan was the creation of a progressive academic institutional identity for the College within the community and the consolidation of departments. The new five-story mid-rise facility near Prospect Park in Brooklyn will contain twenty-four general classrooms and five computer labs; the School of Science, Health and Technology; and a 350-seat dining hall and kitchen. The School of Science, Health and Technology will occupy the top four floors of the new facility, with approximately one discipline per floor. Each department will have its own faculty offices, as well as required research space and laboratories. The sixteen teaching labs are designed for flexibility, so they can be used for several different subjects over the course of an academic year. A 1600 square foot module was utilized and ample storage and prep space provided; customization was avoided wherever possible. The corridor and lobby, which provide views onto the community and allows the community to witness the activity within, will provide a light-filled environment conducive to student and faculty interaction. Interior glass-enclosed access stairs connect the floors and encourage the interdisciplinary mingling important for a rich educational experience. Go to the Medgar Evers College Website |
