The first new component of the architects' master plan is a 400-student, 20-story residence tower. In combination with two existing dormitories, the building creates a new residential quadrangle, shielded from the noise and view of the adjacent boulevard. Secure and private, the quad is bordered on the north by a new café and student lounge. While the materials and details of the building are sympathetic to the surrounding historic structures, the uncompromised expression of its communal spaces, single and double rooms and the new conference center on the top floor convey a progressive image, representing the vitality of an institution of higher education for women.
