This mixed-use health science facility, which serves as the gateway to the institution's urban campus and hospital, contains three distinct program elements: biomolecular research laboratories, faculty offices and 383 residential units for staff members. With the existing medical structures, the building forms a new landscaped courtyard, which provides quiet relief from busy First Avenue. The sophisticated interplay of proportions, materials and compositional elements identifies the program components and minimizes the bulk of the twenty-five-story structure. A ground-level concourse filters 7,000 people daily and connects the new and existing spaces of the hospital campus.
