Peter Norton Symphony Space This new theater complex unifies the much-loved
Symphony Space theater with the renowned Thalia theater. In addition to
preserving the 827-seat Symphony Space theater, the project recreates
the Thalia as a flexible venue, allowing end-stage or cabaret-style configurations,
and includes associated support spaces, a renovated lobby and box office,
new offices and new vertical circulation and mechanical systems. The building
has recently been incorporated into the base of a new residential building,
which utilizes the unused air rights of the property. The exterior, a
modernist composition made up of interlocking planes and blocks of glass,
aluminum, and cement plaster wraps the corner site at West 95th Street
and Broadway. The exterior and the marquee, whose slim aluminum cantilever
glows from within, creates for the Symphony Space an identity distinct
from the large building that now contains it. List
