University of California at Los Angeles
Morgan Center Intercollegiate Athletic Department and Hall of Fame

Los Angeles, California
40,000 square feet
2000

Located at the heart of the campus at the intersection of Bruin Walk and Westwood Plaza, the new Morgan Center Intercollegiate Athletic Department and Hall of Fame celebrates the tremendous reputation of UCLA's athletic program and will serve as the starting point for all campus tours. Designed to complete the fourth corner of this heavily trafficked intersection, the new building also rationalizes various pedestrian sequences and reinforces the existing landscape: a new two-story entry to the building is on axis with Bruin Plaza and the grand stair of the Ackerman Student Center to the west. The renovation of the existing building and a 40,000 square foot, three-story addition allowed for an increase in office space for coaching and administrative staff on the upper two levels and improved resources for student athletes and expanded media and conferencing facilities and Hall of Fame on the first floor. The choice of materials on the building's exterior reflects an abstraction of the architectural vocabulary of the historic campus while the building's massing visually redefine the horizontality of the campus.
